Simple Chicken Soup

Simple chicken soup; nothing fancy, just deliciousness.
Simple Chicken Soup

To celebrate Halloween, and try to make up for a little bit of the dismal time the kids have been having due to coronavirus shutdowns, about a month ago we bought tickets for a Halloween event at Popeye Village.  Let me head off sideways for a moment and explain Popeye Village for everyone outside of Malta.

Hopefully, we all remember the long-running cartoons with Popeye (the spinach-eating sailor) and Olive (the not-so-faithful girlfriend of the aforementioned spinach-eating sailor).  Well, some time ago, there was a film made.  I have never seen this particular movie, and so I cannot recommend it or not recommend it.  But, the film was made here in Malta, in a village called Mellieha, Mellieha being one of the most picturesque parts of northern Malta.  The film-makers went to Mellieha and built a whole set for Popeye to live right beside the sea.  The film is done and dusted, and the crew went on their merry way leaving behind Popeye’s make-believe village.  Malta adopted this village and made it into a tourist attraction – Popeye Village.  It’s open all year round and does special events for Easter, Halloween, Christmas etc. We have never been to Popeye Village before, but this looked a lot of fun for the kids.

Booked and paid for, I never dreamed we would head off towards another partial shutdown again.  I told my kids, so they had something to look forward to.  My youngest, Taran, sort of listened and then ran off to be a monster – raaaarrr!  (I know it was a monster because when he is a zombie he only ever has one shoe on! – No, I don’t understand it either but at least it gives my husband and I a heads-up on what he is pretending to be.) Isla, at five, understands a bit more than her little brother.  She asked lots of questions.  Since then, every night before bed, she would ask me again and again about the spooky village we would visit it on Halloween.  Excitement, excitement, excitement!  Then, just three days, ago they announced Halloween was cancelled!  I had to get up my courage and tell my daughter… there were tears, we had cuddles, we have a very upset little girl.

Now, I need to get my thinking cap on for a home-made spooky Halloween Village replacement!

And, while I am thinking about that, here’s a simple chicken soup!  There are far fancier chicken soups out there, some of which I will post in good time but, I do find that quite often I just need to get something made!  It doesn’t need to be gourmet, just tasty and filling.  With that in mind if it’s chicken soup this fits the bill; in truth, you can probably not bother with the cinnamon and ginger without too much loss of taste.  I have left them in because they are dried spices.  It’s just a case of measuring the amounts and popping them in which isn’t too much trouble.  With it being Autumn, I find having warming spices in any meal is always a good thing.
