Mustardly Braising Steak.

Ingredients

  • 2x 250g braising steak
  • 1 Tbsp solid fat (lard is best)
  • 1x onion, roughly chopped
  • 250 mls or 1 cup of beef stock
  • 1/2 Tbsp tomato puree
  • 1x garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 tsp dried mustard powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried thyme
  • 1x bay leaf
  • 1 Tbsp coconut cream
  • pinches of salt
  • pinches of black pepper

How to make it

Heat a fan assisted oven to 160 deg C or 320 deg F.


  • 2x 250g braising steak
  • a few pinches of salt
  • a few pinches of black pepper

Sprinkle the salt and pepper onto the braising steaks and rub in to both sides.


  • 1 Tbsp solid fat (lard is best)
  • 1x onion, roughly chopped
  • 1x garlic clove, crushed

Heat the fat to a high heat and sear the steaks on each side until they are browned, a few mins on each side. Remove the steaks from the pan and place them into the casserole dish.

Reduce the heat to medium.

Using the same pan and fat fry the onion till translucent, around 5 mins. Add the crushed garlic clove and fry for one more minute.

Add all the contents of the frying pan into the casserole dish with the steaks.


  • 250mls beef stock
  • 1/2 Tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 tsp dried mustard powder
  • 1 bay leaf

Add the above ingredients to the casserole dish. Cover the dish and bake in the oven for 1 hour 20 mins.


Remove the steaks from the casserole dish and wrap in aluminum foil.


  • 1 Tbsp coconut cream
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of pepper

Pour the sauce from the casserole dish back into a frying pan.

Add the above ingredients into the pan and simmer on medium for 10 mins, keep stirring.

Pour back over the steaks to serve.
